We do not… Make it easy on you. Promise you a black belt in two years. |
We do… Require hard work and dedication. Provide an education. Teach real world street-wise self defense. Tend to precipitate a life-style change. |
|
The Situation… The primary purpose of training in a system of self defense is
to learn how to survive and stay healthy in the real world… to protect
yourself and your loved ones, to develop a sense of confidence and of being
in control of your life. If you live, work, and/or travel in parts of town that are not
pristine and sanitized, then self defense should mean training your mind and
body to be smarter and tougher than the average street predator – and
believe me, a lot of those guys have grown up fighting, conning, and thinking
of ever more devious ways of separating you from your money and/or
possessions. They’re tough, hard, and won’t think twice about
physically hurting someone. Relating to how tough the predators are, martial training for
self defense purposes should be realistic enough in intent and application so
as to give the student a reasonable chance of success (i.e., survival) should
he/she ever need to use it. Training teaches one to react instinctually and
reflexively; and you will react the way you train. Self defense
training that does not utilize and emphasize realistic attack scenarios and
hard physical contact not only defeats the purpose of training, it’s
irresponsible. Training in self defense without a reasonable approximation of
realistic encounters – the intensity of emotions, the fear-induced
adrenalin rush, the physical contact that lets you know you’re alive
– affords a grave disservice to the practitioners: Unrealistic training
builds unrealistic expectations and a false sense of security. Keeping in mind the thought that, statistically speaking, six of
every ten Americans will be a victim of violence by the time they’re
thirty years old, the idea of not engaging in some form of self
defense training seems a bit irresponsible. |
